The Housing Navigator serves as a housing advocate for homeless individuals residing at the Goodwill Inn. They also may provide housing placement services and coordinate with Keystone Village, Brookside Commons, and Carson Square (applications/eligibility process, and provide support for housing support service staff with client needs and assist clients with needs to reduce barriers to housing).

Primary Responsibilities/ Essential Functions:

  1. Support the mission and vision of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan.
  2. Serve as housing navigator for homeless individuals.
  3. Provide a safe, dignified and respectful environment for all persons served.
  4. Ensure the confidentiality of all persons served.
  5. Provide housing placement services to single individuals and families residing at the Goodwill Inn.
  6. Assist housing support service staff as needed to address clients continuing housing needs.
  7. Provide transportation as needed to clients.
  8. Act as liaison between guest/clients served and landlords/property management companies and provide advocacy as needed.
  9. Coordinate application process project based voucher units - assist inn guest with making application, certify eligibility of applicants and other duties as needed.
  10. Inform and empower each client to develop goals and objectives.
  11. Set up an appointment with each individual within 2 weeks of his or her intake.
  12. Meet with each client to assess his or her needs and develop an Individualized Service Plan.
  13. Make appropriate referrals to partner agencies such as Community Mental Health, Department of Human Services, Michigan Works, etc. and
  14. Make appropriate referrals to other Inn personnel such as the Vocational Case Manager.
  15. Compile and record assessments, housing plans, progress notes, and case notes on assigned clients.
  16. Monitor and document each client's progress in HMIS.
  17. Conduct additional meetings with clients as necessary.
  18. Participate in client review meetings.
  19. Be familiar with Inn intake and exit criteria and Inn policies.
  20. Assist the Inn Manager with statistical and narrative portions of monthly progress reports.
  21. Adhere to all Goodwill and Goodwill Inn policies and procedures.
  22. Grant writing as assigned.
  23. Other duties as assigned by the Inn Manager.

Reports to: Goodwill Inn Housing Service Manager

Supervises: Volunteers, Interns

Education, Licenses, Certifications and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or other Human Services field required. Licensed social worker preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Familiarity with local human service providers and other community resources and agencies
  2. Effective communications skills, both verbal and written
  3. Computer experience and expertise
  4. Good organizational skills
  5. Ability to multi-task
  6. Ability to follow instructions
  7. Ability to work well independently as well as with other team members
  8. Ability to work with minimal supervision after training
  9. Previous case management experience
  10. Experience in grant writing
  11. Knowledge of and sensitivity to persons with disabilities or who are disadvantaged
  12. Knowledge of and sensitivity to persons with substance abuse disorders and mental illness
  13. Knowledge of and sensitivity to persons who are survivors of domestic violence
  14. Previous experience working with the homeless population is preferred

Physical Requirements:

  1. Lifting up to 20 pounds, stairs, walking on uneven surfaces, and bending
