The Director of Advancement will lead the advancement activities for Goodwill Northern MI, including identification, cultivation, solicitation & stewardship of major gift prospects, annual & planned giving efforts, and donors, to achieve individual income goals and support organizational goals. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with Executive Staff, our Board of Directors, and outside contractors, this position is responsible for designing and implementing strategies to broaden and strengthen Goodwill NMI's development, outreach & community relations activities, building upon existing relationships. The Director will be expected to be able to represent the message, vision & mission of Goodwill Northern MI. While primarily focused on major gifts and fundraising, the position may also support communications efforts and events.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Support the mission and vision of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan.
  2. Perform work in a safe manner observing all Goodwill safety policies/procedure.
  3. Perform duties and interact with all Goodwill team members, clients, and customers in a professional manner.  Respect the diversity of others including, but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities.
  4. Develop fund development objectives and strategies that include annual giving, major gifts and planned giving.
  5. Manage a portfolio of 50-75 donors capable of making a gift of $5,000 or more. 
  6. Develop robust relationships with donors and prospective donors and work with the Executive Director and key volunteers to develop donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies. 
  7. Coordinate and support the Fund Development Committee of the Board.
  8. Coordinate and manage the donor  database.
  9. Research and write grants.
  10. Oversees fundraising and/or donor development events.
  11. Develop and implement direct mail appeals.
  12. Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising and grant programs.
  13. Maintain a high degree of sensitivity regarding donor information and confidentiality.
  14. Develop special/targeted fund development campaigns to support specific areas and needs.
  15. Research, identify and cultivate major donors and grant prospects.
  16. Keep current on trends in the fundraising and grant fields.
  17. Train board and volunteers in the fund development area.
  18. Serve as a Goodwill representative on governmental, not-for-profit, educational and other agency committees as needed.
  19. Serve as a community advocate for Goodwill of Northern Michigan.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Executive Director

Supervises: Fund Development staff and volunteers

Education, Licenses, Certifications and Experience:

Bachelors Degree or equivalent, and a minimum of five years broad experience with emphasis on funding and grant development, including major gifts, annual giving and planned gift solicitation and cultivation, or a background in marketing & communications or a bachelors degree and relatable experiences. An ability to articulate social justice values to a wide range of individuals. Previous public relations experience is preferred. Certified Fund Raising Executive (CRFE) or Certificated Fund Raising Management (CFRM) is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and communication skills, including the poise and presence to be effective with a wide range of constituents and ability to present to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships within the Organization and with the public and other external sources
  • In-depth knowledge of the roles of a Board of Directors, volunteers and administration.
  • Conceptual, analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Orientation toward detail with excellent follow-up skills
  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects
  • Proficiency in office applications software, donor database  experience is helpful

Other Information:

This is a full-time exempt position working out of the S. Airport Rd. Administrative offices. This position requires routine travel and the ability to work a flexible schedule including occasional early morning, evening, and weekend hours.
