The Director of Finance provides the leadership and direction to plan and carry out the organization's financial activities and responsibilities. Responsible for all phases of general accounting, payroll, payables, receivables, borrowing, budgets, internal controls, methods and procedures, taxes, and internal auditing.  Ensures the utilization of sound fiscal financial policies and procedures. The position is a member of the executive team and reports to the CEO. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Support the mission and vision of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan. 
  • Perform work in a safe manner observing all Goodwill safety policies/procedures. 
  • Perform duties and interact with all Goodwill team members, clients, and customers in a professional manner.  Respect the diversity of others including, but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities. 
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures and internal controls. 
  • Facilitate the utilization of, and adherence to, the fiscal, financial, and cash management policies for Goodwill. 
  • Provide strategic direction and financial analysis to assist management decisions.   
  • Participate in organizational strategic planning.  
  • Oversee the annual operating budget process and integrate with long-term budgetary planning and costs management in alignment with Goodwill's strategic plan.  
  • Review and ensure accurate reporting, in compliance with GAAP that outlines the company's financial position, activities, forecasts and net earnings.
  • Ensure timely reporting for internal department needs and external agencies compliance reporting.   
  • Institute and maintain other planning and control procedures, and identify, analyze, and report variances vs. budget and prior period.  
  • Set the goals and objectives for the department; provide leadership to ensure goals are met. 
  • Oversee daily and month end operations of GL, AP, AR, Payroll. 
  • Lead the finance team to ensure accurate and timely payroll submission, invoice payments, invoice issuance, completion of general tasks related to the accounting function. 
  • Ensure the preparation and maintenance of GINMI's financial, accounting, and statistical records, including general accounting and fixed assets; timely issuance of monthly financial statements. 
  • Reports monthly/quarterly/annual financial information. 
  • Manage preparation and completion of the annual budget process, assist with BOD presentation and approval and upload of the approved budget into the accounting system. 
  • Ensure the protection for organizational assets through internal control and internal auditing.  
  • Assist with the development and implementation of accounting standards and procedures to ensure uniform accounting practices, adequate internal controls and compliance with order or regulations issued by licensing agents and appropriate government agencies. 
  • Prepare accurate and timely information required for the annual external financial audits.   
  • Ensure compliance with all tax reporting standards for the organization.   
  • Comply with the accounting related aspects of all grants and contracts. 
  • Secure the best possible financing arrangements for operational initiatives as necessary. 
  • Complete special reports, financial analyses and projects as requested. 
  • Implement and maintain compliance with pertinent accreditation standards for both departmental and agency requirements. 
  • Oversee the financial aspects of awarded grants. 
  • Assist in the year-end close process with external auditors. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 


  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting. 
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively more responsible experience in accounting and finance positions.  Accounting in retail business or governmental contract/grant programs desired. 
  • Prefer five (5) years of supervisory experience. 
  • Previous experience in public accounting, non-profit corporations and grants is highly valued. 
  • Valid state driver's license, insurance and satisfactory driving record, required. 
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Knowledge of accounting systems. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all individuals. 

Reports to:  CEO 

Supervises:    Accounting Staff and Payroll Manager
